How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

This is the first study evaluating the efficacy and safety of finasteride in men with male pattern hair loss (MPHL) who have not responded to a placebo treatment.
The study included a total of 58 men with male pattern hair loss who were randomized to finasteride 5 mg or a placebo for at least 1 year. All participants had an enlarged prostate, a male-specific testicle, and a known or suspected prostate cancer, or were receiving finasteride 5 mg, a placebo. All participants were evaluated by an independent dermatologist and were evaluated by a primary investigator (H. P. F). The primary investigator and the investigator monitored patients to determine the most effective hair loss treatment.
Clinical Trial Experience
This was a 2-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, placebo-controlled, phase 1 study to evaluate the efficacy and safety of finasteride 5 mg once daily for 5 years. The primary efficacy endpoint was the change in International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) between baseline and end of treatment period of ≥1 year (the end of treatment was defined as the end of baseline assessment). The secondary endpoint was the mean change in IPSS, or the number of daily doses of 5 mg of finasteride per day.
Finasteride was studied in two phases 1 and 1-2. The primary efficacy end point was the change in IPSS at the end of treatment. Secondary efficacy end points included the mean change in IPSS in the baseline 24-month treatment period (the baseline period was the end of the treatment period).
Safety and tolerability were assessed by the investigator. Patients who discontinued treatment due to side effects, intolerance to finasteride, or adverse events were referred to an endocrinologist. Safety of finasteride 5 mg was assessed by the investigator. A total of 58 men in the finasteride 5 mg arm and 58 in the placebo group were randomized to finasteride 5 mg or placebo, with a mean of 6.3 years (range 1 to 14 years) of treatment. The mean age of the finasteride 5 mg arm was 58.9 years (standard deviation [SD]: 6.1 years] and the mean IPSS in the finasteride 5 mg arm was 18.5 (SD: 9.1) points (P =.13). The mean dose of finasteride in the finasteride 5 mg arm was 0.01 (0.00 - 1.00).
Study Data
The primary efficacy end point was the mean change in the IPSS, or the mean change in the IPSS in the baseline 24-month treatment period. The secondary end point was the mean change in the mean IPSS in the baseline 24-month treatment period. Safety was assessed by the investigator. The mean age of the finasteride 5 mg arm was 58.9 years (SD: 6.1) and the mean IPSS in the finasteride 5 mg arm was 18.5 (SD: 9.1) points (P =.13).
A total of 58 men in the finasteride 5 mg arm and 58 in the placebo group were randomized to finasteride 5 mg or placebo, with a mean of 6.
